Project Genetic Modification - Seven years after the Royal Commission
This project reviews and evaluates the past and future management of genetic modification in New Zealand. We are pleased to release the following two reports as at 14 April 2008.
1. The Review of the Forty-Nine Recommendations of the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification - reviews the extent the recommendations of the Royal Commission have been implemented and to what extent further policy work is required. See Press Releases.
2. The History of Genetic Modification in New Zealand - presents a brief history of genetic modification in New Zealand.
A third paper (in press) discusses The Future of Genetic Modification in New Zealand. It explores the current framework and future directions for managing genetic modification in New Zealand. This paper is expected to be published in late May or early June.
Project Status
Expected Completion Date: June 2008
Purpose
The strategic aim is to report on the current framework for managing genetic modification in New Zealand. We will do this by:
- Providing a brief overview of the history of genetic modification in New Zealand.
- Exploring the gap between what was proposed by the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification and what the government subsequently delivered.
- Evaluating the current policy framework as a whole in order to explore future directions for the management of genetic modification in New Zealand.
Methodology
Our methodology is based on tracking industry, government and civil society activity in relation to the use of genetic modification. In particular, we focus on activity towards the implementation of each of the Commissioners' recommendations from 2001 to today. To do this we have been in communication with a number of relevant government agencies and other interested parties.
Project Update
The first two papers are published (see above). The third paper is currently in press. This paper is expected to be published in late May or early June.
